TMJ: The Self Help Program by John Taddey, DDS

TMJ: The Self-Help Program is a comprehensive guide written by a doctor specializing in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders-TMJ. These common disorders, affecting millions of people, are a group of painful and functional conditions that have their origin in the jaw joint and the jaw and neck muscles. This complex area of the head and neck is a focal point for both physical and psychological stresses that affect each of us on a daily basis. Fortunately, in most cases timely recognition of the problem and immediate response can alleviate the pain and restore normal function promptly. In the majority of cases, a relatively simple series of self help measures are enough to address the problem-discomfort or pain, grinding or popping noises when opening and closing the jaw, irregular or noticeable limited range of movement in the jaw itself. Dr. Taddey explains how to pinpoint the source of your problem, then details what you can do on your own to minimize any trouble. He suggests stress reduction techniques (including biofeedback), lists lifestyle changes to eliminate habits that contribute to TMJ, provides a routine of helpful exercises, and shares soft-diet recipes to promote TM joint health. Dr. Taddey describes simple treatment options to restore jaw alignment in individuals whose TMJ results from an irregular bite or uneven action of the jaw muscles. He explains the use of dental splints and other dental treatments. He also examines the various options open to those whose TMJ results from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. He surveys both the medical options and those offered in non-medical areas. Particularly helpful are his guidelines on how to determine when you should seek professional help. To order, send us a check payable to Lima Road Dentistry, PC for $18.00 ($14.00 plus $4.00 shipping and handling). Indiana residents add 6% sales tax ($18.84).

PERIODONTAL DISEASE: A MAJOR CAUSE OF TOOTH LOSS

This 10-page brochure from the ADA is one of their leading sellers. Text, pictures and diagrams explain the dangers of periodontal disease, the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. Periodontal, or gum, disease is an infection of the tissues that support the teeth. Your teeth are supported by gum tissue; connective fibers called the “periodontal ligament” that anchor the tooth root into its socket, and bone. With proper gum care, these tissues can help you keep your smile for a lifetime. Many adults, though, develop some type of periodontal disease. Left untreated, periodontal disease can be a major cause of tooth loss. To order, send us $1.00 and a self addressed, stamped envelope.

NINE SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP KEEP YOUR TEETH HEALTHY

1. Brush your teeth for at least one minute at least three times a day, seven days a week. I don’t care how busy you think you are, you DO have the time!

2. Floss your teeth at least once a day, six days a week. (You can have a day off!)

3. Get your teeth professionally cleaned by a dental hygienist every 3-6 months.

4. Avoid alcohol-containing mouthrinses. They lead to oral cancer. Several popular commercial mouthrinses contain more alcohol than wine. Sure they kill germs. So would rinsing with vodka!

5. Avoid sugar-containing candy, mints, soda pop and gum. The worst offenders are candies that sit in your mouth and dissolve, like peppermints and suckers.

6. Take at least 500mg of Vitamin C every morning and evening. Vitamin C promotes strong collagen fiber formation in the gums. A glass of orange juice only contains about 60mg of Vitamin C.

7. Don’t smoke or chew tobacco. Both habits cause oral cancer and interfere with collagen fiber formation in the gums. Besides, the are becoming increasingly expensive habits. Quit today. You can use your tobacco money to take a vacation and pay for item 3 above!

8. For extra gum care, rinse with Oxyfresh mouthrinse for at least one minute immediately prior to brushing in the morning and evening. It will help your breath, too.

9. For extra gum care, use a pea-sized blob of Oxyfresh toothpaste on your toothbrush. Place a pea-size blob of your favorite fluoride-containing toothpaste (Crest, Cologate, etc.) next to the Oxyfresh toothpaste and brush with this combination as described in item 1 above. This procedure will help your breath, too.

BAD BREATH CONCERNS

Our office is one of the leading centers in Indiana for the analysis and treatment of halitosis. We have instrumentation that can measure the amount of volatile sulphur compounds at various locations in your mouth. These compounds are the major component of bad breath. These measurements are combined with an overall oral examination to determine the causes of your bad breath. Once the cause is established, we will custom design a treatment plan that will eliminate the problem for you.
For an excellent overview of the halitosis dilemma, read "Ridding Yourself of Bad Breath". This book is available at our office. To order, send us a check payable to Lima Road Dentistry, PC for $9.00 ($6.00 plus $3.00 shipping and handling). Indiana residents add 6% sales tax ($9.54).
